Characters & Plot
Lara Jean Covey is a young 16 year old teenage girl that's half-korean, half-caucasian in high school that loves boys. She is the narrator of the book, PS I Still Love You and the book To All The Boys I've Loved Before. After the fight at the Covey's recital party with Peter Kavinski at the end of the first book, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, Lara Jean realized that she had fallen in love with him. She decided to write a real love letter for Peter saying that she misses him after Kitty (Lara Jean's youngest sister) gave Lara Jean's hatbox full of the fake relationship letters from Peter, that were in the trash, back. Later on, Lara Jean decided to go to Peter's house. "I time it so that we are one stoplight from Peter's neighborhood when I ask Daddy to drop me off. He must hear the intensity in my voice, the necessity, because he doesn't ask any questions, he just says yes." (12). Lara Jean wanted to make amends and hoped for Peter to read the letter after going to the Covey's grandmother's house for New Years. But before all of that, in the first novel, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, Peter and Lara Jean were technically not dating yet; they were secretly trying to make Josh Sanderson (who was Lara Jean's older sister's ex) jealous after he read Lara Jean's love letter. She didn't know how the love letters got sent, but she knew that her life was going to turn upside down. While Peter was trying to make his ex, Genevieve, jealous too, but Lara Jean and Peter Kavinski decided that they should officially date in the beginning of the book, PS I Still Love You.
Peter Kavinski is the boy who's dating Lara Jean. Peter's ex is Genevieve who used to be best friends with Lara Jean, but they stopped being friends. We don't know why Genevieve hated Lara Jean until the ending of the book. "She turns like she's going to leave, and then she stops and says, " I saw you guys that day in seventh grade..." (331). You would have to read the rest to find out what happened in 7th grade. She was confused on why Genevieve kept being friends with her after what happened in the 7th grade, but it was to throw being with Peter in Lara Jean's face.
There's more main character's in PS I Still Love You.
Kitty is basically the reason why Lara Jean is dating Peter Kavinski. In To All The Boys I've Loved Before, Kitty sent out all of Lara's love letters that were in her hatbox. The reason why Kitty decided to send out the letters was because she wanted revenge on Lara Jean for almost telling Josh that Kitty had a crush on him.
One day, Lara Jeans received a letter that she didn't recognize.
"Dear Lara Jean,
A tree fell in our driveway last week and Mr. Barber of Barber Landscaping came by to haul it away. The Barbers are the family who moved into our old house in Meadowridge, and not to overstate but they own a landscaping company. Mr. Barber brought your letter. I saw on the postmark you sent it way back in September, but I only just got it this week, because it was sent to my old house. That's why it took me so long to write back.
Your letter made me remember all kinds of stuff I thought I'd forgotten...
I guess what I'm most curious about is why you decided to send me the letter after all this time. So if you want to call me, or email me, or write me, please do.
Yours truly, John
..." (155-157)
The letter was from her old crush John. Later in the book, John come visits for a friendly reunion in an old tree house with Lara Jean, Peter Kavinski, Chris, Genevieve, and Trevor Pike. They were all best friends, but that changed when Genevieve stopped talking to Chris and Lara Jean. John later on becomes more known in the book when he starts to get feelings for Lara Jean. "We broke so easily. Like it was never meant to be in the first place? That we were an accident of fate? If we were meant to be, how could we both walk away just like that? I guess the answer is, we weren't." (249).Lara Jean broke up with Peter half way through the book because she kept getting madly jealous about Peter being around Genevieve, but what Lara Jean didn't know was that Genevieve had family issues.
There are a lot of other characters that's in PS I Still Love You, but you would need to read to figure out more about the characters.
Themes & Symbols
A big part of the book is a big part of today's society. A big theme for this book is that the internet is forever and that whoever you are, people judge you differently. Lara Jean was embarrassed because a video of her and Peter was posted. Everyone in the school saw the video and started judging her. Whatever negative you post on the internet will always stay on the internet and come back to haunt you later on. But what is shocking was that they didn't judge Peter. It's different for both guy and girl that gets everyone thinking about. People want to be equal, but it's different in PS I Still Love You. Lara Jean got judged, but Peter got praised in the book. Whatever negative you post on the internet will always stay on the internet and come back to haunt you later on.
